“No,” admitted Aunt Jo. “I haven’t anything arranged for the team this year. The three children who were in it last year have all left the district. To tell you the truth I really didn’t know who I could put in it this year.”

“That’s fine then,” said Martin. “We’ve got it all arranged. Jenifer on Rowan, Susan on Kandy and me on Magic, if you don’t mind.”

“I didn’t think you’d be very keen,” said Aunt Jo. “It’s a lot of work. Usually five or six schools enter a team. The show you give has to be really something, not just a walk up and trot down.”

“We have met Cyril Crouch,” said Martin darkly and he told Aunt Jo about Mr. Crouch’s visit and the message he had left for her.

“Really, how rude,” Aunt Jo exclaimed.

“So you see we must win it again this year,” said Martin. “Then you can keep the cup.”

“Do your best,” said Aunt Jo. “But don’t be too discouraged if you don’t manage it. The competition is pretty stiff.”

“We’ll do our very best,” promised Susan.

“How about Magic? Would you like to jump her?”

Martin could hardly believe his ears. “Gosh, yes please!” he exclaimed.
